Sweet One

Sweet one I say
you cannot keep them all.
You will move
she will try
you will forget.
Life will go on without her and you will blossom into your own.
Even when you sweat and save to buy one half of a broken heart
she will wear it for a week.
Then she will forget
and you will throw your half of a broken heart into the wastebasket.
Such is life
and you will keep on blossoming.
Sweet one I say
it isn't your fault.
People grow apart
like the branches of a tree that find their own ways to the sun.
They will reach for their dreams
and will not include you
but you will blossom and grow your own fruit
sweet to the taste
soft to the touch
soon someone will pick you again.
Sweet one I say
you will hurt.
Your heart will break and mend and break and mend
but then the words will escape from your mouth
riding on fear and misunderstanding
and they will be hurt instead
and they will turn on you quicker than a flash of lightning
but just as hot and just as terrible
and you will feel the sadness behind your eyelids
and waves will break over your cheeks
and they will leave and never come back.
Sweet one I say
sometimes it is your fault
but sometimes the fault is no one's and nowhere
and despite your best efforts
they will still forget you.
And on these days you will remember
that you are sweet
and you are soft
and you are blossoming despite the storm
and even when you feel there is nobody left
ground yourself in rich soil and wait.
Sweet one I tell myself
the ones who stay are the rainclouds.
